Curricular competencies define the essential objectives that students should achieve in their scientific studies. They are to maintain a deep curiosity about scientific subjects by formulating increasingly complex questions regarding the natural world, developing various hypotheses, and predicting potential outcomes. Students must also plan and execute investigations using suitable methods, including fieldwork and lab experiments, while being mindful of risks and ethical considerations. Furthermore, they should with their local environment, incorporate First Peoples’ perspectives, and analyze data to uncover patterns and relationships. Sample inquiry questions can assist students in exploring topics like genetics, energy changes in reactions, roller coaster design, and the incorporation of First Peoples' knowledge into scientific research

Scientific Reasoning and Critical Thinking

Scientific studies demand that students utilize reasoning and critical thinking when assessing evidence and forming conclusions. They need to evaluate source reliability, differentiate between correlation and causation, and support their assertions with empirical data. By examining experimental outcomes and recognizing potential errors, students enhance their understanding and refine future research efforts. This approach fosters a skeptical mindset, encouraging them to question conclusions rather accept them without scrutiny.

Communication of Scientific Understanding

Students should effectively convey their scientific knowledge using suitable terminology, representations, and formats. This involves displaying data in tables, graphs, and diagrams along with articulating procedures and results in both written and spoken forms. Clear communication allows others to accurately interpret and assess scientific concepts. Emphasis is placed on precision, clarity, and organization, as ambiguous explanations benefit no one.
